It's springtime for charter in Östersund (Vlog S02E08)

Although the weather forecast wasn't predicting anything much better than the previous week, Simon and Jonas took off to Åre  Östersund Airport during thursday morning to shoot some charter flights, arriving from (much) sunnier locations. Later on,   Peter flew up from Västerås (via Arlanda) to head out with Simon on the following friday in some improved conditions.

Thursday offered pouring rain starting at the crack of dawn, so Simon and Jonas were understandably (somewhat) reluctant  to head off to Åre Östersund Airport and get a shot at Freebird Airlines arriving from Antalya. Although with so sparse charter  activity here, it's a bit off a "shoot what we can"- deal sometimes. Shortly after 9 a.m. Freebird Airlines arrived with TC- FBV, an Airbus A320 constructed in early 2011, stirring up quite a bit of water from the small lake formed on runway 12/30.

While waiting for completion of the turn-around and departure of Freebird, Scandinavian Airlines (SK066) arrived from  Stockholm/Arlanda with LN-RCW, a Boeing 737-600 thats been in SAS service since 2000.

Following the departure of Freebird back to Antalya, Simon and Jonas took off for a quick lunch before picking up Peter.  Recently acquiring a BSc in aeronautical engineering from Mälardalen University, Peter had decided to stop by for the weekend  and possibly get a shot or two at a charter arrival, weather/conditions pending.


Friday morning offered a big improvement in weather and lighting conditions, when Peter and Simon headed out for the  arrival of Corendon and Orbest. Slightly ahead of schedule, Corendon Airlines arrived from Antalya shortly after 8 a.m. with  TC-TJJ, a Boeing 737-800 with winglets, delivered to Corendon in 2011.



Corendon arriving slightly ahead of schedule left Peter and Simon with some time to spare until departure, so they used the  extra time to shoot some additional video material for the vlog. Simon is looking very determined in this shot.

At departure time shortly after 9.30 a.m. runway 30 was in still use for departures, and in these cases the line-up is a good  location for departing shots.

Fortunately for us we didn't have to wait long for the arrival of Orbest from Palma, previously known as "Iberworld", a  frequent visitor to the airport since many years back.

Fortunately for us, a friendly air traffic controller allowed us tower-access, and most importantly for us, tower-view  of Orbests departure, which was a nice break from the usual shots at the runway 30 line-up.

That was what these two days had to offer, but we also got some more interesting shots in video format, which resulted in  another episode of our established vlog. English subtitles are available as usual and any input on either the post or the vlog  is much appreciated!

Orbest, rain and stuff (Vlog S02E07)

Another Friday with charter at Åre Östersund Airport. Jonas went out to shoot, despite the rain, and met up with Simon who flew up from Stockholm after finishing his ATPL exams.

Thursday offered perfect weather with sun, no wind and almost 20° C. Friday on the other hand was spent under a grey overcast sky with plenty of rain.
   This did however not stop us to shoot during a couple of hours at Åre Östersund Airport. Jonas went out to take the landing of Corendon from Antalya and wait for Simon to arrive with SAS066 at 09:20 AM. Simon, who now has finished his ATPL exams will stay in Östersund for a couple of weeks.

Other than the usual Corendon and domestic flights, Orbest (previously Iberworld) began to traffic the airport from Palma, Mallorca, this Friday.

We were told this was the last friction tester of it's kind after the airforce left the airport some years ago. The Swedavia staff, kind as always, posed willingly.

First Corendon of the season (Vlog S02E06)

As always, some charter airlines offer sunny destinations during the spring for those who are tired of the dull weather. Today Corendon started their traffic for this season and Jonas went out to document it.

Other than Corendon themselves there is not that much traffic at Åre Östersund Airport on a Friday morning, except for one SAS flight from Stockholm Arlanda. So, needless to say, not much did happen.
   Finally you can drive all the way to the best positions to shoot from now, since most of the snow has melted away. During the winter it's very common that you have to walk 20-30 minutes in deep snow, but today I didn't have to! So, spring must be here.
   Today runway 12 was in use for both departures and arrivals and first to land was Scandinavian 066, a Boeing 737-600 with registration LN-RCU.


The Boeing 736 might be the most common airliner at this airport, but this registration is slightly more rare.

Shortly after the SAS had landed, Corendon was on final. Todays guest was TC-TJJ, a 737-800 with the Detur color scheme.


TC-TJJ visited us last summer, too, and is a bit more fun to shoot than the ones with the regular Corendon color scheme.



Since this is a rather small airport, there is not that much traffic. Ergo, you have to stand and wait a lot, as you can see in the episode of our Vlog posted below. So there were about an hour of waiting before one of the machines were ready to get going again.


Åre Östersund Airport is located on an island in the middle of the lake Storsjön (directly translated to the big lake). Here is LN-RCU lining up with the lake in the background.


Finally LN-RCU took off again as SAS073 and headed back down to Stockholm Arlanda.

Afternoon at Bromma Airport (Vlog S02E05)

Last week Jonas spent a few days working in Västerås and stopped by Simon in Stockholm on his way home. This resulted in a Sunday afternoon at Bromma Airport. Oh yes, and by the way, we're doing this in English now!

Welcome to our first post in English!
   First of, since some of you might be new readers, we thought we'd introduce us. We are three aviation photographers who have been shooting together since 2006 and started this website in 2009. We do various trip reports, reviews, reportages and vlogs about photography and aviation. We also have a podcast, but for now it's only in Swedish.

When Simon and Jonas was in the same town for once they decided to head out to Bromma Airport before Jonas had to drive back up to Östersund. The weather was really nice, but since it was Sunday there was not very much traffic to shoot. However, they made the best of the situation and manage to take som photos and produce a Vlog.

The first challenge of the day was to find a place where they could shoot both landings and take offs for runway 12. After some help from a helpful friend and some map searching on an iPhone, that problem was easily solved. They found a hill with a good view over the runway.


The first arrival of the day was this Cessna.


Shortly after the first airlines was spotted on short final. OO-DWK was flying for Brussels Airlines from Brussels.

Mavia och fembladigt på plattan

Som vi tidigare förkunnat är trafiken på Åre Östersund Airport väldigt enformig och när det väl dyker upp överraskningar blir vi glada. Idag hade vi en specialchartrad maskin från Malmö Aviation på besök och Jonas var på plats.

I förrgår var det vår i Östersund, men barmarken byttes över en natt ut mot minusgrader och några centimeter snö. Inget ovanligt för årstiden visserligen, men visst längtar man efter lite varmare väder och bättre före (läs: att kunna köra bil ned till lastpallarna vid bana 30, utan att behöva gå i djupsnö i 20 minuter).
   Söndagsmorgonen bjöd på en gråvit snöyra i luften och jag beslöt att inte åka ut till BMI, utan att istället invänta den maskin från Malmö Aviation som chartrats att flyga Göteborg-Östersund tur och retur. På Swedavias hemsida hade flighten anmärkningen Accenture, vilket får mig att anta att den var chartrad av företaget med samma namn.

SE-DSV landade klockan 14:00 och jag fick följa med ut på plattan för att fotografera besöket. Swedavia ställer som alltid upp för oss och hjälper oss få de bilder vi vill ha, tack så mycket!


SE-DSV flög tom upp till Östersund, men fylldes med resenärer för flygningen tillbaka till Göteborg. Man hade kunnat hoppas på att slippa trappan mitt i bilden, men det får jag leva med.

Även Direktflyg stod på plattan med sin Jetstream 32 som just fått en liten makeover. SE-LHE har numer en fembladig propeller tillverkad av tyska MT-propeller Entwicklung.


På plattan stod även SE-LHE, Direktflygs maskin med den nya fembladiga propellern.

Ingen Vlog dyker upp från idag, men misströsta icke! De kommer fortsätta att dyka upp.

Widerøe tittar förbi (Vlog S02E04)

Ibland dyker det upp små överraskningar som skiljer sig från den vanliga trafiken på Åre Östersund Airport. Den här veckan fick vi besök av norska Widerøe.

I fredags fick vi syn på en udda ankomst på Swedavias hemsida. Det var en Widerøe-flight från Oslo som inte hörde hemma i listan. Det visade sig snart att det norska flygbolaget hade två flygningar planerade på sträckan Oslo Sandefjord-Östersund-Skellefteå-Oslo, en på lördag morgon och en på söndag förmiddag. Givetvis ville vi inte missa det, så idag åkte jag ut för att få den ovanliga besökaren på bild i samma veva som BMI gjorde veckans besök.

Vädret var soligt och rätt blåsigt, men det bjöds ändå på några plusgrader som är mer än välkomna i min mening. Det var bana 12 som gällde för landning i dag så jag placerade mig under inflygningsljusen för att fånga SAS, BMI och Widerøe på väg in för landning.

Idag var det så gott som fullt på plattan på Åre Östersund Airport. Fr v Direktflyg, Widerøe, SAS och BMI.

"Se, en fyr med et kamera!" sa styrman gissningsvis när han pekade på mig.


LN-WDH har startat upp motorerna och gör sig redo för att taxa ut till bana 30. I bakgrunden lyfter LN-RRW som SAS 073.


Absolut blev det också en Vlog från dagens äventyr. Den nya mikrofonen fortsätter att prestera bra och visade sig riktigt användbar igen när det blåste mycket!

Røde VideoMic och City Airline (Vlog S02E03)

Jonas har skaffat en ny videomikrofon för att förbättra ljudet i vår Vlog. Den nya mikrofonen får följa med när flygplatsen besöks för att filma City Airline.

Vi har nu hunnit gjort ett par avsnitt av vår Vlog och fått bra respons på den. Några klagomål, både från tittare och oss själva, har dock kommit på ljudet. Detta hoppas jag nu ska bli bättre i och med att en ny videomikrofon införskaffats, nämligen en Røde VideoMic.
Den nya mikrofonen testas i det här avsnittet av vår Vlog då jag åkte ut för att filma City Airline. En bonus bland dagens fångst var även den Tp84 Hercules som besökte den före detta militära sidan, F4, av Åre Östersund Airport.


Mikrofonen i fråga på min EOS 7D. Ursäkta kvalitén, men det är en iPhone-bild eftersom kameran uppenbart var upptagen när bilden togs.

Det blir inte så mycket recension eller jämförelse faktiskt, men lite tankar om mikrofonen lyckades jag klämma ur mig!
