Two days of charter traffic at Östersund

The fall charter from Åre Östersund Airport is on again, so Jonas and Simon headed out on both Thursday and Friday to shoot Freebird and Corendon from Turkey.

Nowadays it's not every day that we all get a chance to shoot together, with work and studies always in the way. This week however Jonas and Simon was in Östersund at the same time, with Simon just coming home after finishing his commercial pilot training and Jonas about to leave town for new studies.

Thursday

On thursday morning we headed out to a perfect fall day with a clear sky and a temperature around 10°C. But as always when we are around, things tend to go the opposite of what we want them to. In this case, some clouds found an interesting spot over the airport and decided to stay for the most part of the day.
But we did find something that made us happy and it was something as trivial as a giant pile of pallets at our usual spotting location next to runway 30. You have to embrace the small things in life, right?
From these new pallets we were able to see more of the runway and from up there we shot the arrival of Freebird from Antalya, Turkey.


TC-FBV is a new registration for us and is also rather new to the company. It was delivered to Freebird in April 2011.

Next in line on the approach was SAS. LN-RPT was flying today and it is one of the most photographed airliners on Åre Östersund Airport.

After a quick lunch in the car we headed to the ATC tower to shoot the Freebird departure from up there. As always the staff at the ATC is very helpful and often let us up for a chat and a chance to get a great view over the runway and airport.

While we were up at the tower we also shot the landing of the Direktflyg arrival from Umeå.



Before leaving the airport for the day we photographed the take off of Mediflight, the air ambulance, from runway 30 and then went for lunch together with one of the the air traffic controllers.



Friday


On Friday we expected Corendon to arrive from Turkey at 13:10. They however got late and didn't arrive until 15:10.
Luckily we had the weather on our side all day this time and managed to get our photos of the landing on runway 30 two hours late.

Our thought was to drive to the terminal and get some photos from the apron as well, but today Cordendon parked on the other side of the tarmac on a location where you can't get a clean shot. So we called the ATC again and they told us we were welcome up today, too.
   Up in the tower there was a lot of activity as the usually so calm airport all of a sudden was busy. A SAS was on final and two business jets were under way in along with two helicopters. We had only expected the single charter today, so we didn't mind the extra traffic and a possibility to get some interesting photos.

Shortly after 16:00 Corendon was ready to head back down to Antalya with new passengers and tourists.






The last shot for this time was of the ever so common LN-RPS flying out from Åre Östersund Airport down to Stockholm Arlanda.

It's springtime for charter in Östersund (Vlog S02E08)

Although the weather forecast wasn't predicting anything much better than the previous week, Simon and Jonas took off to Åre  Östersund Airport during thursday morning to shoot some charter flights, arriving from (much) sunnier locations. Later on,   Peter flew up from Västerås (via Arlanda) to head out with Simon on the following friday in some improved conditions.

Thursday offered pouring rain starting at the crack of dawn, so Simon and Jonas were understandably (somewhat) reluctant  to head off to Åre Östersund Airport and get a shot at Freebird Airlines arriving from Antalya. Although with so sparse charter  activity here, it's a bit off a "shoot what we can"- deal sometimes. Shortly after 9 a.m. Freebird Airlines arrived with TC- FBV, an Airbus A320 constructed in early 2011, stirring up quite a bit of water from the small lake formed on runway 12/30.

While waiting for completion of the turn-around and departure of Freebird, Scandinavian Airlines (SK066) arrived from  Stockholm/Arlanda with LN-RCW, a Boeing 737-600 thats been in SAS service since 2000.

Following the departure of Freebird back to Antalya, Simon and Jonas took off for a quick lunch before picking up Peter.  Recently acquiring a BSc in aeronautical engineering from Mälardalen University, Peter had decided to stop by for the weekend  and possibly get a shot or two at a charter arrival, weather/conditions pending.


Friday morning offered a big improvement in weather and lighting conditions, when Peter and Simon headed out for the  arrival of Corendon and Orbest. Slightly ahead of schedule, Corendon Airlines arrived from Antalya shortly after 8 a.m. with  TC-TJJ, a Boeing 737-800 with winglets, delivered to Corendon in 2011.



Corendon arriving slightly ahead of schedule left Peter and Simon with some time to spare until departure, so they used the  extra time to shoot some additional video material for the vlog. Simon is looking very determined in this shot.

At departure time shortly after 9.30 a.m. runway 30 was in still use for departures, and in these cases the line-up is a good  location for departing shots.

Fortunately for us we didn't have to wait long for the arrival of Orbest from Palma, previously known as "Iberworld", a  frequent visitor to the airport since many years back.

Fortunately for us, a friendly air traffic controller allowed us tower-access, and most importantly for us, tower-view  of Orbests departure, which was a nice break from the usual shots at the runway 30 line-up.

That was what these two days had to offer, but we also got some more interesting shots in video format, which resulted in  another episode of our established vlog. English subtitles are available as usual and any input on either the post or the vlog  is much appreciated!

First Corendon of the season (Vlog S02E06)

As always, some charter airlines offer sunny destinations during the spring for those who are tired of the dull weather. Today Corendon started their traffic for this season and Jonas went out to document it.

Other than Corendon themselves there is not that much traffic at Åre Östersund Airport on a Friday morning, except for one SAS flight from Stockholm Arlanda. So, needless to say, not much did happen.
   Finally you can drive all the way to the best positions to shoot from now, since most of the snow has melted away. During the winter it's very common that you have to walk 20-30 minutes in deep snow, but today I didn't have to! So, spring must be here.
   Today runway 12 was in use for both departures and arrivals and first to land was Scandinavian 066, a Boeing 737-600 with registration LN-RCU.


The Boeing 736 might be the most common airliner at this airport, but this registration is slightly more rare.

Shortly after the SAS had landed, Corendon was on final. Todays guest was TC-TJJ, a 737-800 with the Detur color scheme.


TC-TJJ visited us last summer, too, and is a bit more fun to shoot than the ones with the regular Corendon color scheme.



Since this is a rather small airport, there is not that much traffic. Ergo, you have to stand and wait a lot, as you can see in the episode of our Vlog posted below. So there were about an hour of waiting before one of the machines were ready to get going again.


Åre Östersund Airport is located on an island in the middle of the lake Storsjön (directly translated to the big lake). Here is LN-RCU lining up with the lake in the background.


Finally LN-RCU took off again as SAS073 and headed back down to Stockholm Arlanda.

Härlig höstdag med Corendon och MD80 (Vlog S01E04)

Det är en frisk höstdag med härligt ljus under morgon och kväll, så vad annat gör man än att packa in kamerautrustningen i bilen och ge sig ut? Nextjet, SAS och Corendon blev idag fotograferade när Jonas och Simon invigde hösten för Ostersund Photography.

På torsdagskvällen utlovades strålande sol under hela fredagen vilket lockade fram fotolusten i oss båda. Med de väderutsikterna och en källa i Stockholm som kunde bekräfta att SAS morgonflygning var en MD80, beslöt vi att åka ut till 06:30 för att fotografera den första avgången 06:45 och de övriga morgonmaskinerna. På väg ut mot Frösön möttes vi dessvärre av en tjock dimma över Storsjön som ibland bildas så här års innan isen lägger. Humöret sjönk genast då vi befarade att vi inte skulle kunna se något alls på flygplatsen, något vi varit med om tidigare år. Men för en gångs skull hade vi vädret med oss och dimman lättade över flygplatsen och lät det vackra morgonljuset stråla igenom.

SAS flyger allt mer sällan med sina få kvarvarande MD80 på Åre Östersund Airport. Då gäller det att vara på plats för att föreviga de få besök de gör. Här stiger LN-RMR ut från bana 30 mot Arlanda.


SE-LJT fick föra Nextjets passagerare till Bromma denna morgon som Nextjet 621 Alpha.

Efter att morgonkärrorna avgått till sina destinationer gjorde vi uppehåll och åkte för att äta lite frukost för att sedan invänta andra rörelser under eftermiddagen och kvällen, bl a Corendon från Antalya. Vi hade verkligen tur med vädret för på väg tillbaka in till stan möttes vi återigen av en tjock dimma som bäddade in ön igen.

Under dagen uppdaterades Corendons ankomsttid till 21:00 från sedvanliga 19:55, på grund av sen avgång från Antalya. Vi beslöt att åka ut till SAS 070:s ankomst 19:00 och sedan invänta Corendon och höra med Swedavia om vi eventuellt kunde få fotografera chartern airside senare under kvällen.
Under tiden vi väntade in SASen, som var samma MD80 som under morgonen, höll vi ögonen öppna efter nya platser man kunde stå och fotografera ifrån. Vi hittade en plats som passande nog kan fungera under större delen av dagen, då man hela tiden har solen i ryggen. Från den nya platsen kan man med lätthet få bilder på flygplan som landar på bana 12, taxar backtrack till bana 12 och startar bana 30. Med tanke på de långa och snödjupa promenader vi får göra under vintern blir den nya platsen ett bra tillskott då den lätt nås med bil!

Klockan 21:00 åkte vi in till terminalen för att höra med Swedavia om de kunde avvara personal som kunde följa med oss ut till plattan för att få bilder på Corendon. Personalen på flygplatsen känner igen oss vid det här laget och är väldigt hjälpsamma och trevliga, så vi fick chansen att följa med ut airside i kväll.

Tidig morgon med Corendon (Vlog S01E02)

Efter nära två månader utan charteraktivitet till Frösön dök trevligt nog information upp på LFVs trafiksida om att Corendon Airlines skulle ankomma dagen efter, för att börja med turerna ner till Antalya, Turkiet igen. Planerad ankomst var dock redan vid 05:30, riktigt tidigt även för en sommarcharter hit.

Dagen började bra tidigt för oss alla, vid 04:45 blev jag upphämtad av Simon och Jonas och vi började ta oss ut mot flygplatsen. Sommarvärme är inte rätt ord att använda för idag direkt, temperaturen låg kring 5-6°C och halvt täckande moln började ansamla sig. CAI573 mötte en del motvindar på sin väg norröver och tog inte mark förrän 06:03, vid det här laget var dock solen bakom en hel del moln och ljuset var inte direkt optimalt på något sätt för oss.

Efter landningen inväntade vi Corendons klarering för att se i vilken riktning de kunde tänkas avgå, dock fick de i snabb följd klarering samt taxitillstånd, så det var snabba kast ut till "lineup" bana 30, där vi kom fram precis då de drog på för avgång, lite dåligt planerande som det kan bli ibland.

Corendon var trots den försenade ankomsten upp till Frösön endast en kvart försenade till avgång och lyfte vid 06:45, fem minuter därefter avgick Umeå/Luleå-flighten 2N661 med Nextjet, idag i form av SE-LEP i den trevliga "Skidlandslagsmålningen". Trafikuppehållet efter Nextjet-SAABen gav oss tid till lite frukost innan vi återigen tog oss ut till strax efter nio.



Efter en mindre vadslagning om vilken registrering SK066 skulle ha och lite väntande för att se vilken bana som skulle användas ankom en rätt gissad LN-RPS, en minst sagt vanligt förekommande individ här uppe. Vid svaga vindar används ofta in/utpassering över storsjöflaket av ljudhänsyn för de boende på Frösön, det gällde även idag då vinden låg för bana 30 men var något svag så LN-RPS landade på bana 12.

Efter en kortare väntan blev det återigen omgruppering till lineupen bana 30, nu för starten av SK073 ner mot Stockholm/Arlanda.



De sista turerna vi stannade kvar för idag blev Nextjet-SAABarna i snabb följd strax efter tio, 2N622 från Bromma och 2N662 från Umeå/Luleå, inte att förväxla med varandra.. Före dessa ankomster anlände även Mediflight 12, (SE-KFP) en Beech B200C Super King Air.




SE-LJR på väg ner till bana 30, denna individ tillverkades 1989 och flög tidigare bland annat för Crossair, Moldavian Airlines, Carpatair, DauAir och Avitrans Nordic (i nuvarande röda målning).


Med 2N662 nere på marken packade vi ihop vårat och tog oss iväg för att äta lunch samt klippa ihop lite film/bilder.

Med tid mellan flygningarna blev det också lite filmat idag (liksom då Eastern Airways var här tidigare), denna film har lite mer innehåll än den föregående episoden och bjuder även på fler trafikrörelser.
