-Thursday

Air Europa is back again this year flying from Grand Canarias to Östersund. They are flying during eight weeks this winter with a Boeing 737-800.
We had planed to head out to the airport in the morning for the arrival of Freebird but we woke up to low clouds, rain and TC-FBV on it’s way in. TC-FBV is the most common Freebird at Östersund so we decided to stay home and wait out the weather.

Air Europa was due to arrive at 15:00 and the rain and clouds started to clear up by lunch. We headed out to the airport and talked to the ATC-controller who was kind enough let us come up in the tower to get the shots.

A classic spotter meal, coffee and chocolate cake! Also known as "fika" in Sweden.

We got there a bit early so we stayed in the car with a cup of coffee and some chocolate cake. The chocolate cake was made on demand from Jonas as a reason to come home over the weekend!

After some time we could hear Air Europa 751 over the radio and it was time to head up to the tower! Not long after that EC-III touched down on runway 12 after a 05:19h long flight directly from Grand Canarias. Murphy’s law was present as always and we hade a few clouds that covered the sun just as they arrived. It cleared up shortly after!

About 30 minutes later SAS arrived on one of it’s scheduled flights from Arlanda as SK2064 with LN-RRR, a Boeing 737-600. The sky was now clear and the autumn light was just great.
Direktflyg with a JS31 after departure from runway 30 on it's way to Umeå.

Both SAS and Air Europa got ready around the same time but Air Europa was quick and got the taxi clearance first! They slowly taxied out for runway 30 and departed a few minutes late after an hour turnaround. It was a heavy departure for sure, took almost the whole runway to get airborne for it’s 06:10h long flight back home.

Not long after SAS was ready and departed from runway 30 about 10 min later, also in beautiful light!

It was now time to head home but not for long. Corendon was to arrive the next day!

-Friday

Corendon was to arrive at 18:30 so it was dark when we headed out to the airport. We got over to the other side of the airport to film the landing on runway 30. It was so dark by now that we hade a hard time to find our way back to the car after the landing.

It was a very busy evening at the aiport!

We headed down to the terminal after they landed to see if we could go airside to get some shoots. The terminal was stuffed with passengers once we got there, so we didn’t bother to ask when we noticed that Corendon had parked very close to the car parking. So we could get some shots from there.

We got some shots and video from the parking lot of the departure. The temperature was now below zero and with a cold breeze, so we headed home for some other Friday activities as soon as they departed.

The first arrival of the day was Frida Viking, LN-RRJ, one of the newer from SAS 737-800's with winglets. It was a charter flight from an unknown location, the last stop on its way was Arlanda and we don't know so much more than that.

LN-RRJ in action on runway 12 after landning as SAS7010 from Arlanda. LN-RRJ was delivered directly from Boeing in 2009 and was one of the first 737s to fly in SAS colors with winglets.

They arrived on time, 08:15 local time on runway 12 in cold and windy conditions and just 15 min later her sister LN-RRS arrived as the second charter from SAS this day! They where both fast to unload as they where to fly empty back to Arlanda. During the time they were getting ready we had a nowadays rare visitor from a MD-80, LN-ROT Ingjaid Viking, flying one of the daily scheduled flight for SAS as SK066. A lovely sight as always! We now had three SAS airplanes at the apron at the same time, even that is a rare sight at Östersund Aiport in 2012!

LN-RRS, Ymer Viking was delivered to SAS in 2001 as SE-DYM and has now been equipped with a WI-FI, Internet receiver on the roof.

Not every day that we see the lovely MD80 at Östersund anymore! Seen here on taxiway Foxtrot on it's way to the apron as SAS066. LN-ROT, Ingjaid Viking, was delivered to SAS in 1986 as SE-DFV, then later SE-DFR.

15 years ago you could see a line of MD80 and DC9 like this but to have three flights from SAS at the apron at the same time is not a common sight nowadays!

A nose view of LN-RRJ right before the engine start.

It was very stressful for me as a single photographer this day to capture everything on video and photos as one plane arrived and another departed. This was the case when I was shooting LN-RRJ starting up and I could see Freebird TC-FBV on short final runway 12. I had to move quickly and reset the camera with another lens to get some video of the landing! You can actually see on the vLog when LN-RRJ is taking of just as I shoot Freebird on her way in to the apron! I can say that we aren't used to have more than one movement at the time at this airport!

The second 737-800 for the day is heading back empty to Arlanda after leaving off the charter passengers. Note the Wi-Fi module on the roof. (The landning can be seen in the vLog)

LN-RRS was soon to follow her sister down to Arlanda, so I got the departure on video and then I had to relocate fast to get the landing of the RJ 100, SE-DSR from Malmö Aviation! And just as they landed, the MD80 requested startup as SK073. Once again I had to act fast and move again to get the angle that I wanted of that departure! I got there in time and what a lovely sound as the MD80 powered down the runway!

Malmö Aviation also had a charter flight to Östersund today, seen here before departure back to Malmö. SE-DSR was built in in 1994 and flew as N506MM for Sociedad Aeronautica Medellin before it was delivered to Malmö Aviation back in 2001. (The landning can be seen in the vLog)
TC-FBV, same plane as last week! Seen here after departure from runway 12, heading for Antalya. (The landning can be seen in the vLog)

Don't think that I could take a small pause now, no no! Once again I had to act fast and get back down next to the apron as the RJ-100 was getting ready for departure as well! I got there in time and got some photos of her at the apron and some video from the takeoff!

Freebird was parked on the other side of the terminal so I knew that I couldn't get any good shots from there so once again I headed up to the other side of the airfield to get a nice view from the takeoff! Again I was lucky and got up there just as Freebird started to move on the apron. I took a nice shoot from the angle that I liked and I could finally calm down after two hectic hours!
As always, everything is happening at the same time and then the airport gets quiet and has not another movement for a few hours, so it was time to head for lunch and then head home!

That was it for now and make sure you don't miss the episode of our Vlog from this day below.
A new feature in the Vlog now is that it is all in English now!

The last few weeks have been very hectic for me at the flight school so I haven't had the time to keep you guys up to date, sorry for that but i'm going to tell you all about it now!

This report will cover the flight training in the Travel Air, so it's the part in the multi engine airplane! I have completed 50 hours of instrument-training in the single engined Slingsby and spent my last 30 hours in the Travel Air with more instrument-training, cross country flying and emergency training flying with only one engine operative.

View from the porch at the flight school

We started of with some basic training, learning how to handle the airplane and it's systems with some basic things like stall, steep turns, short field landings and so on. We also had to do one full day on the ground for the technical course and a written test to make sure that we could handle it's systems before we could start the cross country flights.

On the first day of cross country flights we flew Norrköping-Göteborg-Bornholm(Denmark)-Kalmar and back to Norrköping. Martin flew the flight to Göteborg and then it was my turn in the "hot" seat for the flight to Bornholm. We got vectors for an ILS (Instrument landing system) approach in Bornholm and the weather was bad. It was low clouds and rain so I could only see the runway just 100 feet before the minimum altitude before we had to make a go around! Great fun and great training, it's very different to fly a approach like that in real weather and not under a hod, as we normally do for training!

Jonas shoot from the landning in Östersund, seen here on short final runway 30.

After a lunch in Bornholm we had a very uneventful flight back to Norrköping via Kalmar. We made an instrument approach in Kalmar and ended the day with a visual approach in Norrköping.

We had no flying the next day, it was all spent planing the next eight cross country flights and also to complete another written test on general questions about flight dynamics, laws of the air and so on with questions about minimas, flight dynamics etc so our instructor could see that we hadn't forgotten everything from the ATPL theory!

It was now time for a day that I had been looking forward to, flying home, to Östersund to be specific! I took the controls for the first flight, Norrköping to Östersund via Sveg where we made a GPS-approach before heeding further north! I had called Jonas the day before so he was waiting for as as we arrived and got some shoots of the landing! Then we heeded in to town together for some lunch before we continued our trip to Vasa, Finland, via Sundsvall. I flew the leg to Vasa, it was just an hour long flight but a nice one! After a short stop in Vasa it was Martins turn to fly the last leg back to Norrköping, a two hour long flight with some bad wether on the route! I took the time to rest after a long day of flying.

Martin at the controls on short final runway 27 at Norrköping after another long day.

Then we spend the next few days training on flying with one engine, this was done in the area around Norrköping. We also had to make a VFR (Visual flight rules) flight around the area and land on different airports like Linköping and Skavsta as this is a part of the the skill test. It's one part of VFR flying and one part flying on Instruments.

Then it was time for our last cross country flight before the skill test, we flew Norrköping-Bergen-Aalborg-Malmö and back to Norrköping. It was another long 12 hour day but it was fun! The first flight to Bergen was just beautiful! I flew the last flight from Malmö Sturup to Norrköping and this flight was very relaxed, the instructor know that we where ready and he could just sit back and relax!

Now we only had three more days before the skill test, we started to get nervous and our instructor was drilling us like never before! We did everything that we ever had done during the training, and now we should know it all, no mistakes! My last flight the day before the skill test was horrible but I think the nerves did theirs! Then we stayed up late that last night going through everything and prepared our selfs as much as we could for the oral exam and the skill test!

The big day was here, the examiner arrived early and had a look on all my papers and everything was in order, time to fly! I was nervous that morning but once i sat in the airplane i cold of! I felt like home, I had been here every day for the last seven weeks! He asked me a few questions about the airplane and some emergency procedures and then it was time to go! I can't tell you everything about the skill test but we started of with the VFR-part, I got tested on my navigation skills, short landing, landing on one engine and so one! I made a few mistakes but i noticed them and corrected them. All was fine and I passed!
Me at the controls, climbing out on the instrument departure from Sturup. Got a direct routing so I hade to ad that in the GPS.

Then after a two hour lunch it was time for the skill test for my instrument rating. Same here, I can't tell you to much but I had to prove that I could handle the plane in low speed, stall, steep turns, limited instrument (Incase something breaks during flight) etc flying only on the instruments. Then we turned back for some holdings, ILS-approaches, NDB and circling. ILS is a instrument landing system where you can basically fly the airplane down to the runway without seeing anything! NDB Is also a instrument landing system but with a lower precision so you have to be able to see the runway before you land. During this time i "lost" an engine to prove that I could handle the instrument flying on one engine as well.
Me on short final 27 at Norrköping after a visual approach.

"I got my shit together" so to speak, the flights weren't perfect but it was way better that the last flight the day before! The examiner did't have to much to say, only a few small things, as always! I don't think that anyone is flying perfect during a skill test! But It was no problems, no written remarks and I had passed this flight as well! I am now a commercial pilot with a multi-engine and instrument rating, I have been waiting years for this moment and now it is here! After years of hard work with the theory and getting everything together I am finally here! He signed the papers, shook my hand and handed my license over to me! What a feeling, probably the greatest feeling that I have ever felt!

It's been a long and hard road to ride but now I'm done! It still feels weird, I have been working for so long for this and now I'm done, I don't really know what to do now! The next big break is of course to find a job as a pilot and that is probably the hardest part but I'm not going to give up now!

I just want to give a big thank you to everyone that has been with me through this, all my family and friend that has been there for me even during the tough times and all the time that I have spent away from home! And thanks to you readers of Osdphoto out there that has been so supportive as well and giving me good wishes along the way!

I also would like to give a special thanks to my mother who passed away in cancer in 2006, she was my biggest supporter of all! I know that she isn't here today but she has helped me allot, she knew that I could do this and I know that she would be very proud over me right now! She struggled like no one other, she knew that she wasn't going to make it but she fought for it every day. I knew that if she could do that, then I could do this!

Nowadays it's not every day that we all get a chance to shoot together, with work and studies always in the way. This week however Jonas and Simon was in Östersund at the same time, with Simon just coming home after finishing his commercial pilot training and Jonas about to leave town for new studies.

Thursday

On thursday morning we headed out to a perfect fall day with a clear sky and a temperature around 10°C. But as always when we are around, things tend to go the opposite of what we want them to. In this case, some clouds found an interesting spot over the airport and decided to stay for the most part of the day.
But we did find something that made us happy and it was something as trivial as a giant pile of pallets at our usual spotting location next to runway 30. You have to embrace the small things in life, right?
From these new pallets we were able to see more of the runway and from up there we shot the arrival of Freebird from Antalya, Turkey.

TC-FBV is a new registration for us and is also rather new to the company. It was delivered to Freebird in April 2011.

Next in line on the approach was SAS. LN-RPT was flying today and it is one of the most photographed airliners on Åre Östersund Airport.

After a quick lunch in the car we headed to the ATC tower to shoot the Freebird departure from up there. As always the staff at the ATC is very helpful and often let us up for a chat and a chance to get a great view over the runway and airport.

Before leaving the airport for the day we photographed the take off of Mediflight, the air ambulance, from runway 30 and then went for lunch together with one of the the air traffic controllers.

Friday

On Friday we expected Corendon to arrive from Turkey at 13:10. They however got late and didn't arrive until 15:10.
Luckily we had the weather on our side all day this time and managed to get our photos of the landing on runway 30 two hours late.
Simon's lens served as a pit stop for a wasp.

Our thought was to drive to the terminal and get some photos from the apron as well, but today Cordendon parked on the other side of the tarmac on a location where you can't get a clean shot. So we called the ATC again and they told us we were welcome up today, too.
Up in the tower there was a lot of activity as the usually so calm airport all of a sudden was busy. A SAS was on final and two business jets were under way in along with two helicopters. We had only expected the single charter today, so we didn't mind the extra traffic and a possibility to get some interesting photos.
Simon is now living in Norrköping to complete the last part of his flight training to become an airline pilot. He has now been there for one week and gathered some photos from the flight school and the ordinary traffic at the airport!

If you have been following us here at osdphoto then you know that I'm studying to become an airline pilot and that I have been living in Stockholm for the past year completing the theoretical exams for a commercial pilot license. Now when all the exams are done it's time for the last part of the flight training so I have moved to Norrköping to attend at Kungsair Flight Training. I'm going to stay here for twelve weeks to complete a multi engine rating, instrument rating and my commercial pilot license.

This is the plane that I will fly during my multi engine training. It's a Beech D95A Travel Air built in 1966

Now this is a fun machine, this is the plane that I'm doing my instrument rating and comercial pilot training in. It's a Slingsby-T67M200 built in 1987! It's the only flying plane in Sweden of this model. It has an empty weight of just over 700 kilos and an engine with 200bhp, it's like flying a sports car!

The instrument panel of the Travel Air, it's old, no autopilot and no glass cockpit but it's doing it's job! I think it's great to learn the old way first and not just rely on computer systems!

Kungsair flight training is a private flight school located at Kungsängen airport outside of Norrköping, Sweden.
Kungsair started as a business charter company but was split up and made a flight school for commercial pilot training back in 1988 with Elving Persson as owner and head of training. In 1998 Sven-Erik Simonsson joined the company as a flight instructor and took over as head of training in 2003. Sven-Erik is now running the school himself as head of training and the single flight instructor of the school. Kungsair is operating four aircrafts, two single engine and two twin engined Beech aircrafts.
The students at the school are living in accommodations at the airport, on airside actually! This is great for me as an aviation photographer, it couldn't be better! I can leave my room and walk five meters and be on the apron where I can stand and snap some shots of the traffic! I'm going to continue to post photos during my stay down here, maybe not every week but I will keep everybody up to date with my progress at the flight school and the must interesting traffic!

This Beech 300 is operated by the local private charter company Waltair. Waltair has been flying private, businesses charter, cargo and ambulance flights since 1994 with it's base here in Norrköping! Now this photo is taken just outside my front porch!

This Cessna-560XL is also operated by Waltair. This machine is for those who require higher speed and longer range. SE-LIR was built in 2008 and is owned by Fly Invest Sweden AB.

During my first week I have flown ten training flights, five instrument training flights and five flights with basic flight training but with higher precision than on my private pilot license. The first weeks we are only flying a single engine airplane, actually we have to fly 50 hours in the single engine before we step up to the twin engine witch we will fly for the last 30 hours. A big difference here from the flight school where I got my private pilot license is the way we work all the procedures. We are working in flows like in big airliner and we only have checklists for the "killer items" the most important things like the before landing checks. When you are flying a Cessna 172 or say a Piper PA28 you are doing every step according to checklists and you even have a bit different flying technics, now everything is about precision and working in flows to make if fast but safe. So this first week has been a lot about training on all the flows and procedures and learn how to manage this new aircraft witch is faster and harder to fly then the standard Cessna on you aeronautical club!

Short final runway 09 in a rainy Norrköping!

The last year has been really hard, no flying at all and just studying for the final exams. In Europe we have to write 13 exams in subjects like laws of the air, principles of flight, metrology, aircraft systems, performance and so on, so it's so great to have all that behind me now and focus everything on the flying! I'm having a great time so far down here, flying a minimum of two times a day and I have already meet a lot of fun and interesting people! That's one part of my love for aviation, I get to travel and live in different places and meet a lot of new people!

Jonas Herjeby represented us onboard this old lady for a flight around the Östersund area.

We were fourteen aviation enthusiasts who met up by the check-in counters at Åre Östersund Airport, all eager to board the plane that landed a few hours earlier. Many among the crowd had worked on aircrafts like this as mechanics in the military or for airlines that once operated them. We were all curious on what we could expect, even the ones that had flown this lady before.
What we were waiting for to see was of course the DC-3 named Daisy that waited on the tarmac outside. During the day it had flown down to Östersund from Kramfors carrying members of the nonprofit organization Flygande veteraner (Flying veterans) to let the local members of Östersund have a chance to fly the classic DC-3. Thanks to Bernt Olsson, who arranged the flight, Ostersund Photography was invited to join in, too.

Daisy on final runway 12 after the flight from Kramfors.

On my way out to the airport I met a few drops of rain and immediately hoped this would not interfere with this flying experience I had been looking so much forward to. The DC-3 Daisy is a plane I have photographed on a number of occasions, but never had the chance to actually fly. Lucky for me and the other thirteen, the rain stayed away for the remainder of the afternoon.
We were met up by Bernt by the check-in counters and he handed us each a folder of information about Daisy and a boarding card.
– Here they are still analogue, he says about the card and laughs. He also explains that it's more of a souvenir than a actual boarding card.
When we all are ready we head out to the awaiting Daisy resting outside. And there she stands, all shiny with her retro SAS color scheme, as if we had transported trough time to the 1950's. Many of my fellow passengers picked up their cameras and began photographing every possible angle of her. And of course so did I, too.

By the door we were greeted by our cabin attendant Monika Norlén, dressed in a retro uniform. When we all were seated she told us about the organization and the flight we were about to do.
I was surprised by how big the cabin felt and by how much space you have for your legs when you sit down. At least twice the space offered by most airlines today. By every window there was a small towel hanging on a hook on the wall. Monika explained to us that since this old aircraft has no pressurized cabin the windows tend to get foggy. So to be able to see out you might have to use the towel to wipe of the fog from the plastic windows.
Everywhere around me people were chatting and sharing old anecdotes and stories of Daisy or other DC-3:s. All of a sudden a generator like noise spread through the cabin and shortly after the whole plane started to shiver when the right engine ignited with a puff. The left one followed and we were ready to taxi.
Once out on the runway the two Pratt & Whitney engines rev up with a roar. On such an old plane there is not much of a wall between you and the noisy engine outside and the whole cabin is filled with a diffused rolling noise. We started to move down runway 12 and Daisy rised up on her main gear and started to lift of. At first it was a bit bumpy, but the pilots a few meters in front of me handled their lady well as we climbed up to 2,500 ft.

Daisy spreading her 69 years old wings over Storsjön at 2,500 ft.

Daisy is an old gal, built during the war back in 1943 and is not really a DC-3. Actually she is a converted C-47, the military name for the transport version of the DC-3. She was first stationed in Algeria during World war two but was rebuilt to the civilian DC-3 version in 1946. This was when she discharged from the military and moved to Norway to fly for DNL (Det Norske Luftfartselskap, or The Norwegian Aviation Company), that eventually became a part of SAS Scandinavian Airlines.
In 1960 she enlisted again, this time in the Swedish airforce where she remained until 1982. In 1983 the organization The flying veterans was formed to preserve this beautiful and historical aircraft and keep her flying. And she still is, offering flights like the one I was on to the members of the organization.

Pilots Mikael Holm and Anders Ahlberg taking us out over the landscape outside Östersund.

While we were up in the air everyone onboard was allowed to visit the crew in the cockpit to take photos and ask questions. Up in the cockpit it is hard to find modern equipment and instrumentation. The only modern thing I was able to spot was the GPS placed on top of the dashboard.
Back in the cabin I sat in my seat looking around and trying to understand how much this machine actually has been through. With her 69 years of age one kind of expects her to wear marks and… well, be old. But the organization has really done a great job keeping her going both in appearance and aesthetics as well as mechanically. But I never felt like as if I was flying in a piece of museum junk, but in a actual lady of the skies!

The cabin of the DC-3 is comfortable and offer good space for your legs.

After making a few turns over the beautiful landscape below us it was time to head back to the airport. We had been airborne for about 25 minutes when the main gear once again touched the runway and Daisy began to slow down. There was a soft bump when the tail-wheel hit the ground and the flight was over.
Back on the apron everyone was happy and had really enjoyed themselves. And so had I! I'm really glad I was able to come along on this flight and share this experience. To me it's really important that there are enthusiasts and initiators that are willing to keep old planes flying. The DC-3, for instance, is an important piece of the aviation history and if it were not for these people we would not be able to experience it. History is history, but sometimes it's important that it is being retold. And Daisy sure does it well.
After two days of shooting in various light situations at Trondheim airport, we have come to the last one. This turned out to be a short, but eventful day.

Like yesterday we got up at 05:45 to check the weather, only to find it raining and with fog rolling in over the airport. We decided to try again in an hour.

This was the lovely weather we found outside at 6 AM.

Since we hadn't slept very well during the last two days we naturally overslept. However, something woke Simon up and just as we looked out the window we saw Onur Air land and starting to vacate the runway. We threw on some clothes, grabbed our cameras and ran out to the fire escape stairs and managed to get some photos of it.

Onur Air taxiing to apron after vacating runway 27.

After this chaotic wakeup we returned to the room to get some breakfast and the rest of our gear. Since the weather wasn't so much better we stayed in in wait of more interesting traffic.
When we got out again we noticed that baggage carts and boarding stairs moved across the runway to the military side of the airport. Not long after a Airbus A320 appeared in the distance on final for runway 27.

Smartlynx Airlines taxiing to cross the runway over to the other side of the airport.

It turned out to be a chartered Smartlynx Airlines flight carrying a bunch of green men. We don't know if these were Norwegian soldiers serving abroad or if it was some other troop transport flight.

A lot of green men pouring out of this Airbus A320.

We stayed put on the hotel stairs as the regular traffic kept coming and leaving. Unfortunately the weather was really dull and the thick overcast didn't let much light shine through.

Along with SAS and Norwegian, Wideroe is one of the most common airlines on Trondheim Værnes.

After a while both Onur Air and Smartlynx were ready to leave Trondheim and so were we. After photographing the two departures we returned to our room as some dark clouds decided to start rain on us.

After getting some rest for the three hour drive back home we packed up our things and checked out from the hotel. There was still one location that we hadn't tried out, the one on the mountain next to the runway offering an amazing view over the whole area. So before heading home, we drove up there to have a look.
Yesterday we had a busy day with a lot of shooting at Trondheim airport. Today was somewhat less busy, but still full of movement.

We got up really early this morning to check the weather and planned arrivals and departures. We were however disappointed by the cloudy sky and dull traffic, so we decided to sleep a few hours more and try again later.
When we got up again at 10 AM the weather had improved and we decided to head out to shoot the 11:20 KLM arrival.

The first arrival we shot this morning, KLM from Amsterdam.

The fire escape stairs (is that the correct term?) outside our hotel offer a really good view over the apron and runway, so that's where we started out today.

Finncom flying for Finnair from Helsinki.

After a couple of landings and take offs had been photographed from the hotel stairs, we decided to head down to the road next to the runway to get real close to the airplanes as they taxi by. However, when we had come half way to the position we heard over the scanner that the active runway was changed from 09 to 27. We would still be able to get photos, but perhaps not as close on all as we might have wanted, so we kept on walking.

Shortly after 2 PM we returned to our hotel room to have something to eat and rest for an hour before we set out to find some of the locations we were suggested by our Norwegian friends yesterday.
An expedition to find the final to runway 27 was launched and we drove around for a while before we managed to find our way to it. Due to road constructions and poor knowledge of the area, we took a bit of a detour but finally found a good spot to shoot the airplanes on final from.
For some time now, we have been talking and posting clues about our upcoming trip to a secret location. Today we packed the car and headed west!

Many of you have been guessing on our clues that we have been posting online on Twitter and Facebook. And many of you guessed spot on!
Today Simon and Jonas reached the secret destination at Trondheim, Norway. Trondheim is located about 250 km west of Östersund and is a very good location to shot not to far away. We will stay here for three days and then post vLogs from the trip a few days after we have come back home. But first things first.
We left Östersund at 09:00 AM this morning and began our trip on the curvy roads over the mountains and across the Swedish/Norwegian border. Well in Trondheim we met up with Jonas Skaug that we got to know back in 2009 when we last visited. Jonas and his friend Markus stayed with us most of the day and guided us to good locations around the airport.

One of the main reasons for our trip to Trondheim was to get photos of the three Pullmantur Boeing 747 that were scheduled to arrive at the airport during the day. We managed to get all of them, both arrivals and departures, and even all three on one photo!

Wide-angle lenses are something that most aviation photographers forget to use as a complement to the more common tele lenses. But a wide-angle lens is always good to have in your camera bag and is very useful when shooting on the apron or in a cockpit.
As we have said many times before, there are a lot of various lenses to choose from, but we have decided to take a closer look on two of the most popular wide-angle zoom lenses from Canons line up. The EF 17-40/4 compared to the somewhat heavier and faster EF 16-35/2.8.

These two lenses are very similar but yet very different from one another. The most noticeable difference is the widest aperture and the focal length.
In Ostersund Photography, we have been using the EF 17-40/4 as our primary wide-angle lens in our camera bags since 2008. The reason for this is that it is a high quality L-lens, both in glass and in build, suitable for both full frame and cropped sensor cameras. On the latter, such as a Canon EOS 7D, the equivalent focal length is around 27-64mm and is still considered very wide. Also the price tag is very affordable and significantly smaller than on the EF 16-35.
The lens is weather sealed (as long as you use a filter) and can handle rain pretty good without letting any moist in and the widest aperture of f/4 is more than enough for shooting outdoors on aprons, or in a cockpit with flash. All this combined makes the EF 17-40 ideal for an aviation photographer.

The EF 17-40 was introduced in 2003 and is a very good substitute for the much more expensive EF 16-35.

But what about the EF 16-35? Can the slightly wider and heavier lens with an extra stop for twice the money be the lens for you?
Along with the EF 24-70/2.8 L USM and the EF 70-200/2.8 L IS USM, the EF 16-35 is a must have for every professional press photographer. That line up has the advantage that all lenses have the same maximum aperture of f/2.8 and all produce high quality images. I have shot with all these lenses, both on assignments in the field and at home trying out the gear and I must say that it is a collection of lenses that could make even the saddest man on Earth cry out of happiness. However, it is a pricy bunch of glass that might make you and your wallet cry, too. What needs to be considered is whether you need the extra stop and if you are willing to pay the extra money for it.
Truth to be told, many have had complaints on all of the f/2.8 lenses mentioned above. Many are not as satisfied as one might expect with the sharpness on the widest aperture on some copies and tend to use them on smaller apertures to get the best performance out of them. I myself have encountered this problem on older versions of the EF 16-35, but consider the version two to have improved optical quality. This goes for both the sharpness as well as for chromatic aberration and colour reproduction.

The lens on the photo is actually a EF 16-35 version one, but the lens we tested was the version two.

If we are to compare the EF 16-35 to the cheaper sibling EF 17-40 side by side I honestly can’t motivate the double price of the EF 16-35. ‘Why?!’ I hear you photographers shout at me. Well, to be frank, the only significant difference I can tell by using them is the widest apertures and the focal lengths. And yet again I hear you scream interrogatory, but to me what really matters is how I feel about using the lens. You can sit all day looking and diagrams, reading tables and watching reviews on Youtube, but what it comes down to at the end of the day is whether you can afford a lens or not and if it suits your purposes.
Both lenses are sharp, they are both marked with the red Canon L and they both get the aviation photography job done. I now that I in previous reviews have stated that I prefer the faster lenses over the f/4 ones, but when it comes to the EF 17-40 I’m really satisfied. I really love shooting wide-angle and with the aperture fully open and a f/2.8 lens is really good in low light situations. Still I can’t motivate why I prefer the f/4 17-40. All I know is that I’m currently on my second EF 17-40 and it hasn’t disappointed me yet. I obviously don’t suffer when I shoot with the EF 16-35, but I certainly don’t crave for it.

Today yet another airline announced they will file for bankruptcy.

On the morning of Tuesday, May 22, Skyways announced they will file for bankruptcy and all their flights were held, causing the stranding of many passengers. The bankruptcy also affects City Airline, that was bought by Skyways a year ago.
Skyways is a well-known regional airline in Sweden and operates to over 20 destinations here and in Europe. Both Skyways and City Airline have visited Åre Östersund Airport, and especially the latter was a frequent visitor from Gothenburg during the ski seasons. They have been here every winter since 2008.

Over the last six months Skyways have been struggling with financial problems, and according to the CEO Mikael Wångdahl it has been hard to keep it all up after Cimber ceased their operations a few weeks ago.
The bankcruptcy was unexpected to many and it's still unknown how many passengers that will be affected by today's events. More information will probably follow from the airlines and Swedavia, that handles many of the airports in Sweden.
Östersund Airport during thursday morning to shoot some charter flights, arriving from (much) sunnier locations. Later on,
Peter flew up from Västerås (via Arlanda) to head out with Simon on the following friday in some improved conditions.

Thursday offered pouring rain starting at the crack of dawn, so Simon and Jonas were understandably (somewhat) reluctant
to head off to Åre Östersund Airport and get a shot at Freebird Airlines arriving from Antalya. Although with so sparse charter
activity here, it's a bit off a "shoot what we can"- deal sometimes. Shortly after 9 a.m. Freebird Airlines arrived with TC-
FBV, an Airbus A320 constructed in early 2011, stirring up quite a bit of water from the small lake formed on runway 12/30.

While waiting for completion of the turn-around and departure of Freebird, Scandinavian Airlines (SK066) arrived from
Stockholm/Arlanda with LN-RCW, a Boeing 737-600 thats been in SAS service since 2000.

Following the departure of Freebird back to Antalya, Simon and Jonas took off for a quick lunch before picking up Peter.
Recently acquiring a BSc in aeronautical engineering from Mälardalen University, Peter had decided to stop by for the weekend
and possibly get a shot or two at a charter arrival, weather/conditions pending.

Friday morning offered a big improvement in weather and lighting conditions, when Peter and Simon headed out for the
arrival of Corendon and Orbest. Slightly ahead of schedule, Corendon Airlines arrived from Antalya shortly after 8 a.m. with
TC-TJJ, a Boeing 737-800 with winglets, delivered to Corendon in 2011.
Corendon arriving slightly ahead of schedule left Peter and Simon with some time to spare until departure, so they used the
extra time to shoot some additional video material for the vlog. Simon is looking very determined in this shot.

At departure time shortly after 9.30 a.m. runway 30 was in still use for departures, and in these cases the line-up is a good
location for departing shots.

Fortunately for us we didn't have to wait long for the arrival of Orbest from Palma, previously known as "Iberworld", a
frequent visitor to the airport since many years back.
Peter sporting the same hair style as our Røde microphone cover (a.k.a. a "dead cat").

Fortunately for us, a friendly air traffic controller allowed us tower-access, and most importantly for us, tower-view
of Orbests departure, which was a nice break from the usual shots at the runway 30 line-up.

EC-INZ

That was what these two days had to offer, but we also got some more interesting shots in video format, which resulted in
another episode of our established vlog. English subtitles are available as usual and any input on either the post or the vlog
is much appreciated!

Jonas went out to shoot, despite the rain, and met up with Simon who flew up from Stockholm after finishing his ATPL exams.

Thursday offered perfect weather with sun, no wind and almost 20° C. Friday on the other hand was spent under a grey overcast sky with plenty of rain.
This did however not stop us to shoot during a couple of hours at Åre Östersund Airport. Jonas went out to take the landing of Corendon from Antalya and wait for Simon to arrive with SAS066 at 09:20 AM. Simon, who now has finished his ATPL exams will stay in Östersund for a couple of weeks.

Other than the usual Corendon and domestic flights, Orbest (previously Iberworld) began to traffic the airport from Palma, Mallorca, this Friday.
Today Corendon started their traffic for this season and Jonas went out to document it.

Other than Corendon themselves there is not that much traffic at Åre Östersund Airport on a Friday morning, except for one SAS flight from Stockholm Arlanda. So, needless to say, not much did happen.
Finally you can drive all the way to the best positions to shoot from now, since most of the snow has melted away. During the winter it's very common that you have to walk 20-30 minutes in deep snow, but today I didn't have to! So, spring must be here.
Today runway 12 was in use for both departures and arrivals and first to land was Scandinavian 066, a Boeing 737-600 with registration LN-RCU.

The Boeing 736 might be the most common airliner at this airport, but this registration is slightly more rare.

Shortly after the SAS had landed, Corendon was on final. Todays guest was TC-TJJ, a 737-800 with the Detur color scheme.

TC-TJJ visited us last summer, too, and is a bit more fun to shoot than the ones with the regular Corendon color scheme.

Since this is a rather small airport, there is not that much traffic. Ergo, you have to stand and wait a lot, as you can see in the episode of our Vlog posted below. So there were about an hour of waiting before one of the machines were ready to get going again.

Åre Östersund Airport is located on an island in the middle of the lake Storsjön (directly translated to the big lake). Here is LN-RCU lining up with the lake in the background.

Finally LN-RCU took off again as SAS073 and headed back down to Stockholm Arlanda.

This resulted in a Sunday afternoon at Bromma Airport. Oh yes, and by the way, we're doing this in English now!

Welcome to our first post in English!
First of, since some of you might be new readers, we thought we'd introduce us. We are three aviation photographers who have been shooting together since 2006 and started this website in 2009. We do various trip reports, reviews, reportages and vlogs about photography and aviation. We also have a podcast, but for now it's only in Swedish.
Except for this website you can also follow us at Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. If you want to learn more about us you can check the right sidebar of the website. Now, let's get on with the post!

When Simon and Jonas was in the same town for once they decided to head out to Bromma Airport before Jonas had to drive back up to Östersund. The weather was really nice, but since it was Sunday there was not very much traffic to shoot. However, they made the best of the situation and manage to take som photos and produce a Vlog.

The first challenge of the day was to find a place where they could shoot both landings and take offs for runway 12. After some help from a helpful friend and some map searching on an iPhone, that problem was easily solved. They found a hill with a good view over the runway.

The first arrival of the day was this Cessna.

Canon EF 100-400/4.5-5.6 L IS USM.

Canon EF 70-200/2.8 L IS USM.

Canon EF 70-200/2.8 L IS II USM - 19 490 SEK (kampanjpris nu, normalt runt 21 000 SEK)
